Best Protein Shakes for GLP-1 Users: What to Look For
Why do GLP-1 users need a protein shake at all?
Because the medication makes eating harder and protein more important at the same time. Appetite drops, fullness comes early, and a meaningful share of the weight lost on semaglutide and tirzepatide is lean mass, according to the DXA sub-studies of both drug trials. Protein at 1.4 to 2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight is how you hold on to muscle in a deficit, and on a suppressed appetite that number is hard to reach from plates alone. A shake is 25 to 30 grams in a glass with almost no volume. How much protein you need on a GLP-1 sets the target; this page is about the easiest way to hit part of it.
What should a GLP-1 protein shake have on the label?
Which type of protein shake sits best on Ozempic, Wegovy or Zepbound?
There is no trial ranking protein types for GLP-1 users. What follows is practical experience and the general tolerance literature, offered as a starting point.
How do I use a shake as a meal on a GLP-1?
Cold, always. Blend with ice or keep the carton in the fridge. Cold goes down on a queasy stomach when room temperature will not.
Sip over twenty minutes. Chugging a shake on a GLP-1 is a fast route to nausea. Treat it like a meal, because it is one.
Breakfast first. Breakfast is the easiest meal to skip on a suppressed appetite and the one that sets protein up for the day. If you only use one shake a day, this is where it goes.
Water, not milk, unless you need the calories. Milk adds fat and volume. Most GLP-1 users are short on neither appetite suppression nor fullness.
Count it. One shake is one of your four or five meals, not an extra. Write the day as "shake, yogurt, chicken plate, eggs" and see whether the total lands.

Protein supplements for GLP-1 users that are not shakes
A shake is the easiest form, not the only one. Greek yogurt (about 17 grams per 170 g cup, plain, low-fat), cottage cheese (about 12 grams per half cup), and a scoop of unflavoured whey stirred into oatmeal or soup are all ways to add 10 to 20 grams without adding a whole plate. Collagen powders are popular but are a poor source of the amino acids muscle needs; they do not count toward the number here.
What should I skip?
Anything sold as a "weight gainer" or "mass" shake. Heavy, high-calorie, slow.
Shakes over 10 grams of sugar. That is dessert with protein in it.
Very high-fibre "meal replacement" powders while nauseous. Fibre plus a slow stomach is uncomfortable.
Doubling the scoop to hit the number faster. Two scoops in one sitting is 50 grams your body will not use well and your stomach will not enjoy.
If you cannot keep fluids down, or nausea is stopping you from eating at all, that is a prescriber conversation, not a protein-shake conversation.
